In general kittens need their mother s milk until they are a minimum of 4 weeks old.
When do kittens stop feeding from mom. They certainly should mot be nursing at 4 months and should be separated from their mother unless you plan to keep them in. The complete weaning process generally takes about a month meaning that the wee kittens are usually fully weaned when they are between 8 and 10 weeks in age. The weaning process usually continues for about another month until the kittens are fully weaned between eight and 10 weeks of age. This makes them dependent and cats are independent creatures.
Feeding a kitten over 8 weeks of age once a kitten has surpassed eight weeks of age they should be fed twice a day with normal kitten food. They shouldn t be relying on their mother to this time. If you want to do what is really best for the kittens then dont rehome them untill 10 12wks this gives them a better start in life. Kittens sucking on their mother at 9 months old isn t normal in the wild.
At about 5wks old start giving them solid foods they will still feed from their mum aswell though. During this time the kittens will still occasionally nurse on their mother but they will also start to eat liquid kitten food. They should be stopped even if it comforts them. Do not rehome the kittens before 8wks old later if they are not fully weaned.
The weaning process normally begins when kittens are around four weeks old and is usually completed when they reach eight to ten weeks. Solid food should not be an issue for kittens of this age but they may still try to nurse on occasion.
